Betsy DeVos’ Role of Championing for Education Reforms

Betsy DeVos began her political cause during her youthful years at Calvin College, and since then she has remained politically active. For over 30 years now, Betsy has engaged in various political activities like party organization, campaigns and even serving as the chair Republican Party for Michigan. As a businesswoman, Betsy and Dick DeVos (her husband), have been looking for solutions to address social problems in the society. She has been pursing reform, especially in the education sector through several non-profit institutions. Recently, Philanthropy magazine interviewed Betsy on her role in the educational reforms, and in particular the school choice program.

During the interview, Betsy said her family foundation is supporting close to 250,000 students in the District of Columbia and 17 states. The educational-choice program which she has been supporting is growing tremendously, and last year the number increased by about 40,000. When a poll was conducted in five states, educational choice was found to enjoy great popularity, mainly among the Latinos.

How Betsy DeVos Became Interested in Education Reforms

When the couple took their kids to school, they met parents who would struggle day and night to afford tuition fees for their kids. After numerous visits to the school, Betsy and her husband decided to support specific students at the school, and that commitment continued to expand. Today, the couple is significantly supporting the Potter’s House. They mainly focused on helping parents from low income backgrounds, and that led to establishment of a foundation that provided scholarship to students from those families. Even after the scholarship, majority of students were still not able to access the education they wanted, and that was when Betsy became more engaged in educational-choice program.

Betsy DeVos’ Personal Background

For close to three decades, Betsy has actively participated in education policies and reforms in the United States. She has been championing for the rights of kids to access education they deserve in order to transform their lives. Betsy’s interest in the education sector began during her early days, being inspired by her mum because she was a tutor at a public school. Betsy’s goal is to advocate for reforms that can benefit underserved kids to access quality education similar to those from privileged families.

For 15 years, Betsy DeVos has worked as a school counselor, helping children who are at risk in Grand Rapids region. Due to her role in the education sector, the President of the United States, Donald Trump nominated her to be the secretary of education. The senate confirmed Betsy’s nomination and she assumed the role of secretary of education. Betsy graduated from Calvin College with a BA degree.
